This is the system pump. Wort flows in the bottom fitting and out the top Tee fitting. The flow to the right goes to a cpvc manifold and from there to the boil kettle and the top flow goes to the HERMS.
The refractometer is used to read opening gravity and works off the principle of light defraction caused by the sugar.
The counter flow wort chiller from PBS. Cold tap water runs in the bottom hose fitting and hot wort in the top tube. The cold tap water and hot wort "counter flow" resulting in cooled wort at within 2 degrees of cold water input. The chiller is pasteurized by running 3 gallons of hot water through it before each brew session. The cold water is not run during the pasteurization phase and the chiller becomes quite hot. The 3 gallons of water are slowly run over a period of 15 minutes or so.
